Cattle numbers

Fig 9 shows data downloaded from Reference 1. The 15% drop in cattle numbers in the 6 years between 1994 and 2001 is roughly consistent with a 2% drop in milk production reported in Reference 2 in view of the 16% increase in yield per cow reported during these years in Reference 3.

Notice how from 2001 onwards, cattle numbers in Scotland diverges from cattle numbers in England and Wales. In England and Wales the trend is dominated by the much larger numbers in England. This divergence from 2001 onwards is consistent with, and adds credence to, the divergence in milk production between England and Scotland shown in Fig 3 of Reference 2 from 2000/01 onwards.
